The Royal Agricultural College ARE YOUR CROP AND PESTICIDE SKILLS UP TO DATE? WHY DO YOU NEED TRAINING?
The law says that contractors who apply agricultural pescides commercially, and all operators born aer 31 December 1964, are required to have a cerficate of competence before using pescides.
People born before this date can use pescides under ‘grandfather rights’ – but using chemicals without training is not a good idea, and assurance schemes oen require all operators to have undergone training and regular updang.
The Pescides Safety Directorate has recently changed its regulaons, and the Rural Skills Centre has altered its courses accordingly. For example, it will shortly become illegal to use pescides containing sulphuric acid and sodium chlorate. The changes were made to protect the environment. In addion, the EU Themac Strategy for Pescides has replaced some parts of the Pescide Direcve 91/414/EEC, although discussions between the Brish government and the EU parliament are sll on going. You can find the latest informaon on the website
www.pes
cides.gov.uk.
Our basic pescide courses are divided into theory and praccal, like a driving test. PA1 covers safety procedures, the use and storage of pescides, keeping records and disposal of pescide containers. The PA2A course will train you in the use of a
tractor-mounted field crop sprayer and includes safe driving pracce, seng applicaon rate and maintenance.
These courses lead to a Naonal Proficency Tests Council Cerficate of Competence, as do some of our other pescide courses such as PA4A; granule applicaon.
In addion we offer agronomy (growing crops) courses; BASIS crop protecon, plant protecon and soil and water management and a Ferliser Advisors Cerficaon and Training Scheme course.
TOP TIPS ON … CROPS AND PESTICIDES
• All operators of granule applicaon equipment require training by law.
• Anyone who wishes to give advice on the use of agro-chemicals commercially must complete the BASIS Cerficate in Crop Protecon.
• Has your crop sprayer stopped working? Our courses will help with fault finding.
