On a recent message board thread Andy Matthews, Head Groundsman at Aston Cricket Club (see page 66), suggested a cheap and effective way of answering the eternal problem of condensation forming on the underside of flat wicket covers and the resultant puddles that are transferred to the surface.
After all the recent rain Andy’s pitch has remained dry with no condensation problems thanks to his ‘A’ frame system.
When the covers are removed the greenhouse effect has greened up the pitch considerably, but the surface remains dry to the touch.
“The 'A' frames are just over a foot high at the centre and about nine feet wide. I asked for ten feet but they work okay as they stand on the cut strip as opposed to the longer grass of the square.
We use these spikes to hold down the cover they are about 6 to 8 inches long and do a very good job.
I hope this idea is helpful to cricket clubs on a tight budget. It certainly works for us at Aston CC.

removable so they take up less space when storing.
The good thing about this system (if that is what you can call it) is, if you leave the ends not pegged down, then the wind gets underneath and aids the drying process.
