Multi Use Games Areas or Ball Courts have been (and continue to be) consistently utilised in community regeneration projects to provide positive healthy activities for young people. Telford & Wrekin Council currently has 29 ball courts and has plans to provide a number more over the next few years (in line with the council’s play strategy) to meet the needs identified by young people themselves and the general community for such facilities. Ball courts provide for a number of sports such as football, basketball, netball, volleyball, handball and street hockey, but in this area they are predominantely utilised for football.

The design of facilities needs to consider location, user requirements, maintenance and public perception / tolerance of the proposal. All aspecst need to be taken into account, particularly when there is the possibilty of a wider impact on the local area with facilities such as floodlights.

Youth and community engagement within the

project’s design and development will create ‘ownership’ of those projects/facilities and will significantly reduce repair attributed to vandalism. A ball court in one socially deprived area has stood for nine years with only a damaged washer (87p) as the only notable expenditure attributed to vandalism. In Telford, the quality of product delivered to young people is important, not just to reduce the cost of maintenance caused by vandalism but to generate pride in young people in their facility/environment and community. In our experience higher quality, more robust facilities justify the slightly higher capital cost by reducing ongoing maintenance costs.

There are 5 steps to delivering the dream ball court:

1. Encourage community confidence to participate (let the dreams begin)

Talk to all young people in their chosen territory (schools, youth clubs, late night youth outreach work to reach this hard to reach group) and establish communication
