EACH issue we catch up with a leading
turfgrass professional and ask him or her what’s going on in...
Who are you? Paul Lowe, I was the Golf Course Manager at Rhuddlan GC in North Wales for 6 years however, I am about to begin my next venture at Bromborough Golf Club on the Wirral.
How are you? Very good thanks, I am in the midst of exciting times, my wife and I are expecting our second child at any time, and I am looking forward to starting my next career challenge at Bromborough
What's your background? I went straight from school into a greenkeeping apprenticeship and loved it. I started my career at Eastham Lodge and worked my way up the ladder. I became Course Manager at Rhuddlan in 2001. I have worked hard promoting the staff and the need for a more sustainable course. I have recently been involved with the Gingerbread men, who are a group of like-minded course managers, networking together, exchanging ideas and methods to achieve further sustainability.
Status? Married, to my wonderful wife Jackie for 6 years with one little princess called Gemma age 3, a real daddy’s girl. We are expecting another very soon. My wife is a week over due. Exciting times!
Favourite Radio Programme? Radio One - Chris Moyles breakfast show. He makes me laugh out loud.
Favourite Film? I have so many, it depends what mood I am in. My top film is probably
A Time to Kill, but I would also say something like The Matrix or Pulp Fiction, I do like those films. Sadly I also like the very girly Notting Hill, sorry - I am big romantic at heart.
Favourite TV? Comedy is a must; The Fast Show, Fawlty Towers, and recently the Catherine Tate show. Sadly, I also like some reality shows, I wish I didn’t but it’s car crash TV and I can’t help watching.
Favourite Sport? I enjoy playing golf although my handicap is only 11. My passion is watching the mighty Liverpool FC, I have a season ticket in the paddock close to the dug out. Looking forward to winning the Premier league soon, with all our new millions to spend. I can but dream.
Favourite Food? As you can tell by my fine figure, I like food. I do enjoy cooking, nothing exotic just good old fashioned English grub. Favourite is roast beef with all the trimmings
Most memorable event in your life? Apart from watching the Reds win the Champions league in Istanbul for the sixth time, it was the birth of my daughter, and the past three years watching her grow.
Pet Hates? Bad drivers, especially if I am in the car with them, I am not a good passenger. Ignorance and rudeness, no need for it, life is too short.
What car do you drive? Audi A4 Tdi. The
other car is a Picasso - good family cars (boring).
Lives READERS
Favourite place - here and abroad? We visit Trevose in Cornwall when we can. It’s the most beautiful place and we have great family holidays there. It also has some great golf courses nearby. I love travelling and I have been to a lot of places around the world. My favourite place abroad is probably Pensacola beach on the Florida Gulf coast. But, my all time favourite place is home, as they say, there’s no place like it.
Where’s our industry going? Onward and upward. There is a real momentum at the moment towards a much-needed raise in greenkeeping stature. I also feel the work the R&A are doing to promote sustainability and continuity in our clubs is having a very positive impact. Obviously, we are in the midst of some unrest at the moment but, when the dust settles and we all start working closer together, I am sure we will all benefit.
Water Absorbent Seed Process
This sports turf renovation mixture is a blend of superb cultivars well respected for sports ground renovation. The WASP treatment assures a rapid establishment, excellent recovery from heavy wear, and good turf quality.
Water Absorbent Seed Process
The very latest new formulation for all Turf seeds developed and applied in Germany-WASP (Water Absorbent Seed Process.)
This innovative new technology for the very first time provides the complete supply of water and nutritious elements to the seedling. A water reservoir, which is created all around the seedling, ensures permanent humidity and thus will not become dry! Moreover this coat contains an initial start up amenity fertiliser, humic acid and an activator for the roots of the plant.

WASP is the very latest technical development of a coating used successfully for many years - this is the very latest 7th formulation.
A complete provision for the new turf seedling with water and nutrient. A reservoir of moisture from the coating ensures that the seedling cannot dry up and has a permanent water supply. This coating also contains a start-off fertilisation for the first growth stages of the seedlings development. Other activators are included for good plant health and good root development
Water is life - through the WASP coating, water, moisture and the nutrients required are made available for good quick growth. The additional water
high quality even germination levels
supply created by WASP visibly affects the growth of the seedling and also the roots of the turfgrass. Extra growth is provided in times of extreme stress conditions such as drought, difficult soil conditions or harsh climatic conditions.
Not only can WASP be used on new sowing areas it is ideal for over sowing and renovating as its not likely that seed treated with WASP will be out crowded due to the rapid emergence offered by WASP. The seedling germination is also more uniform and regular when treated with WASP rather than untreated seed trials.
The treated seed coating sowing swells when it comes into contact with water.
