STUDENT: Stefan Sheraton AGE: 28
POSITION: Full-time student, MSC in sportsturf technology
PLACE OF STUDY: Cranfield University
Exams over, MSC student Stefan Sheraton is focusing fully on completing his 10,000-word thesis. In the gestation stages since the New Year, the thesis, which explores the factors that determine optimal soil aeration using a Vertidrain, is due to be delivered orally to the board at Cranfield at the end of August.
“It gives me an opportunity to hone my presentation skills,” says a slightly apprehensive Sheraton, who maintains that his tour de force could offer fresh insight into what is a mainstay of traditional groundscare. “Many contractors tend to aerate by timescale rather than prevailing conditions,” he believes. “The hope is that the thesis will highlight the optimum times to aerate.” If his theories, backed by tests at Cranfield and at golf clubs, gain credence, he’ll be the proud bearer of some ground-breaking work, he says. Taking an MSC can be gruelling to say the least. You have to fund yourself, house yourself and you can find that you`re drifting alone in an ocean of thought. The year has been a good one for Sheraton, he says. “The course has made me look at things more scientifically and I’d now like to apply some of the science now that I believe I have grasped a reasonable understanding of it.” The cerebral bias of the MSC can detract from the innate physicality of groundscare, says Sheraton, who worked in golf clubs for several years. “I miss the exercise more than anything,” he says wistfully.
