The work of Old Trafford Groundsman showcased on Sky during Windies Test match
OLD TRAFFORD Groundsman, Pete Marron, was the subject of a 15 minute showcase during the tea interval on the third day of the Test match between England and West Indies.
The programme began with Pete hitting a golf ball - teeing off from the boundary and pitching his ball on to the wicket covers. “Can you imagine Mick Hunt at Lord’s being allowed to do this?” he quipped. Then the cameras followed him to his workshop where Pete introduced the rest of his team.
Next, it was out to the square where the staff were shown removing covers (and golf balls), brushing the wicket to stand the grass up, mowing with a Lloyds

Paladin, rolling with an Autoroller and repairing bowlers footholes. Viv Richards came across to shake Pete’s hand and share a joke, as did Ian Botham, Colin Croft and umpire Billy Bowden.
Pete watched as Botham gave his pitch report which he concluded was “fair”. A quck mention of glue; “I only use if for Twenty20 matches - it’s not a quick fix” and the cameras panned out to show the outfield being cut with a Toro Triple.
Pete explained that once the game had started his work on the square was finished apart from the day to day stuff like repair and repainting lines. His main concern now was the wicket for the up and coming game against Kent.
The studio panel of David Gower, Mike Atherton and Ian Botham agreed that Pete probably produces “the best Test wickets in the country” and all sang his praises. Botham had the last word saying “Pete is a dangerous man to be with in the evening!” suggesting that they often share a pint or two together!
