Town Hall The

THE foundation stone of the ‘new’ town hall was laid on October 22, 1887. Originally, the building was to be called the Victoria Hall and was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. However, it has always been called the Town Hall and Institute by the local townspeople. Money was raised by public subscription and the original building was constructed in local limestone at a cost of £1,141.10s.5p. Subscriptions ranged from £300 given by Messrs Hamlyn Brothers, the local Mill owning family, down to 6d from a local resident. Recent redecoration has added three new kitchens and improved toilet facilities with disabled access. A programme of refurbishment and improvement continues.
