on promoting the making of bespoke sheepskin rugs. Recently an order was received from a London client for a 6m by 4m rug in Jet Black. This, it is believed, is the largest sheepskin rug ever made at the sheepskin tannery in Buckfastleigh (and possibly the country). It required a total of 99 individual sheepskins and, as you can imagine, a huge amount of expertise to produce. In addition Devonia Sheepskins offers a contract dressing service enabling anyone, private individuals or businesses, to get their own sheepskins made in sheepskin rugs. Many owners of pure bred sheep make use of this service. Some of the unique breeds processed are Manx Loughton, Hebridean, Soay, Devon and Cornwall Longwool, Jacob, White Face Dartmoor, Zwartble, Cotswold and Welsh Mountain Badger Face. The plan over the next couple of years is to create a collection of these varied sheepskins in the visitor centre for all to see.

The tannery also contract dress other types of skins which are mostly deerskins and goatskins but occasionally more exotic skins are processed. In recent times a Burmese Python has been tanned for Paignton Zoo and a tiger

skin, sealion skin and Rodrigues Fruit Bat skin have been tanned for Chester Zoo. With so few tanneries able to offer this service Devonia is keen to assist zoos in preparing skins to be exhibited in their education centres. We currently are assessing the possibility of processing part of an elephant hide for a zoo!

There is plenty of free on-site parking available for visitors and admission is free.
