Buckfastleigh Farmers’ Market

The Globe Car Park

Channel Four series My Dream Farm contacted the couple and they spent the next few months having their venture filmed. The episode was screened in January of this year. ‘With 34 acres, we

realised it would be hard to be sustainable as a traditional farm’ said Dick. ‘We wanted to be self-supporting and with both of us coming from a business background we looked at farming from a different angle. We also wanted to give

something back to the area. Buckfastleigh has a tradition as a wool capital so it made sense to do something with wool.’ For centuries wool

blankets have been used as bedding and they have only recently been replaced by synthetic or down-filled duvets. Although sometimes heavy, the natural properties of wool blankets include warmth, breathability (which allows for self- regulation of body

temperature) and resistance to certain dust mites. Wool is also very durable and can be sourced locally. Thus followed the Beijen’s idea of reinventing the wool duvet.

In collaboration with Buckfast Mill they have developed a wool filling which is both light and warm. Much of the wool from the duvets comes from their own flock of rare breed sheep. They have ethically sourced all their materials including the cotton casing and where possible they seek local or small businesses to supply items such as boxes. Each duvet is handcrafted locally by one of their ten seamstresses and they will soon be expanding their workforce to accommodate demand outstripping supply. Pauline and Dick will warmly welcome you to their farm. They now have a centre where visitors can buy Devon Duvet products as well as a beautiful selection of pottery.
