The William Pengelly Cave Studies Centre and Museum

IT is quite surprising how many Buckfastleigh residents and those from surrounding areas are unaware of the rich treasure trove which lies beneath their feet. Deep below Buckfastleigh Hill is a large

Climate change is nothing new. The bones of animals, such as elephants, rhinos, hippos and hyenas which lived here 120,000 years ago can be seen in the Joint Mitnor Cave.

converted buildings at the top of Russets Lane, into a Study Centre to promote cave science, conservation and education. Fifty years on it is still providing opportunities for all to experience the remarkable features of Buckfastleigh Hill, a Special Area of Conservation.

Pellets are purchased from a local renewable source. Dartmoor National Park’s (DNP) Sustainable Fund and E.ON contributed to the project. In the past year, there has been considerable cash saving and carbon emissions have been reduced by 7.5 tonnes. Anyone wishing to see this system in action can contact the trust on the phone number below. A new project aims to erect two solar panels and insulate the roof with a carbon negative wood fibre board. After its failed Heritage Lottery bid, the trust dug deeply into its reserves and embarked upon a programme of refurbishment providing facilities for the disabled,
