Town Guide. Last year’s edition was
old town which has had an interesting history. The town’s foundations go back to the Middle Ages and the street pattern still retains the same imprint as the original settlement, which is a very rare occurrence as most old towns have changed their layout considerably over the years. Our ‘opeways’ are a special feature of the town and lead us down to the rivers and streams so important in the tanning and woollen industries upon which the town was based. Mining too has played a part in the history of our town and although it is difficult to see the remnants of this industry today, a variety of metals were produced, including copper, tin, silver and arsenic. The radioactive mineral pitchblende was also found in the local area and the mine was used to test radioactive measuring equipment just after the

and associated products, has opened a new visitors’ centre and this will give you a better opportunity to spend some time looking around the town and enjoying the excellent refreshments provided by our cafes and inns. Whatever your reason for visiting, may I as mayor of Buckfastleigh welcome you personally to our town and I hope that you find your visit most informative, surprising and enjoyable.
