Gioacchino Antonio Rossini

Born: Feb. 29, 1792 How Unlucky is That ?

Died: Nov. 13, 1868 Italian Composer. He was born at Pesaro on February 29, 1792, as the son of a horn-player. He counted his birthday only once in four years, and when he was seventy-two he invited his friends to celebrate his eighteenth birthday. He made his stage debut with an opera when he was eighteen, and had written five operas before he was twenty. When twenty-one, his "Tancredi" was produced at Venice, to achieve an instant success, and when he followed with "L'Italiana in Algeri," the Italians hailed him as their greatest living opera composer.

Genius does what it must, talent does what it can, and you had better do what you're told.

Sir Stanley Matthews

Born and Lost in February.

Birth: Feb. 1, 1915 Hanley, England Death: Feb. 23, 2000 Stoke-on-Trent, England Sir Stanley Matthews is generally regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. He made his debut for Stoke City F.C. in 1932 at the age of 17 and after 710 appearances for Stoke and Blackpool, and 54 for England, he retired in 1965 at the age of 50. He was known as "the wizard of the dribble" and in 1965 became the first footballer to be honoured with a knighthood (although he was more proud of the fact that during his 33 year career he was never cautioned by a referee). His ashes are buried beneath the pitch of the Britannia Stadium, the home ground of Stoke City Football Club.
