So perhaps when I say that this tournament was the warmest, and most sincerely respectful competition I have ever played, I mean it without exaggeration. The rituals followed were quintessentially Colombian: simple and unforced; a shaking of hands, a post-game gathering and a few words (in English or Spanish). There were no songs nor silly, unctuous games – just a glowing smile. It carried a sincerity of respect I have not noticed elsewhere before – it felt genuinely Olympic. I knew they had brought us to Medellin at considerable trouble and expense, supposedly to promote sport and sportsmanship; I just wanted to earn their respect. »U
