Primavera, even advertising the events by broadly visible television and billboard campaigns. In this land, sport fights crime, and its uniformed instructors seem as common as police. That community emphasis on sportsmanship dawned on us gradually. Some places we visited suffered intense poverty and squalor; to them, the Spirit of the Game was the crucial ingredient we had to offer. The realization was spoken of in hushed, sometimes embarrassed tones. I have always reserved spirit (or sportsmanship, if you prefer) as a very private matter; I rarely discuss my personal definition as I find it a tedious exercise. I have never felt a particular desire to proselytize.
