Spirit of the Game Award: Jessica Benoit

Jessica Benoit has been a core member of

the Winnipeg Ultimate community for over a decade. Dedicating her time to projects both big and small, she is a committed volunteer who can be found lending a hand at pretty much every local tournament and program. Over the past few years Jess has been involved with the MODS beginner’s league teaching new players about Ultimate and Spirit of the Game. While her formal commitment to the beginner’s league finishes at the end of August, she can often be found playing with these “newbies” in the fall and winter months as a mentor, teammate and friend.

HERE’S WHAT ONE OF HER TEAMMATES HAD TO SAY ABOUT HER:

“This summer my wife and I decided

to try our hands at the game of Ultimate. Neither of us had ever played this sport and didn’t know of anyone who had. I was very pleased to find out that MODS offered a beginners league. We met Jess at our first “game” and were

amazed at how she was in working with a rag tag group of newbies. She did an excellent job explaining the game and the fundamentals that go with it. I was shocked to learn that Jess was only doing this in a volunteer capacity, as she was deeply committed to making sure everyone was finding their own level of enjoyment in the sport.

As time has gone on I’ve gotten to know Jess better. It never ceases to amaze me how one person can devote so much of their time to the ongoing development of this sport. It seems that every weekend Jess is either running or organizing some Ultimate event or tournament. Be it the Nationals which were hosted in Winnipeg, the Hold Back the Snow juniors tournament or even the beginners league which I got my start in, Jess will always make time.” -Ian G Briscoe, player
