RECENT DEVELOPMENTS FOR OBSERVERS IN CANADA

Observers are used primarily for key games during the National Club and College Series tournaments, including some of the associated Regional qualifying tournaments. To support this need and help ensure that Observers of a consistent and high quality are available, we have been developing the Canada Observer Program over the past few years. We have recently finalized an agreement with the UPA across the border to share resources and collaborate in order to support our program and to establish and support the consistency of Observers across both of our (UPA’s and UC’s) programs. As part of this effort, we have recently

trained and certified 6 Observer Trainers across Canada: one in BC, one in Alberta, one in Manitoba, two in Ontario, and one in Quebec. One very important aspect of this agreement is that these trainers are also officially recognized by the UPA, which means that any Observers coming

out of Canada’s Observer certification clinics will be automatically recognized and accepted by the UPA as equivalent to UPA Certified Observers. And so, when any of our Observers wish to go across the border and work at any US tournaments, they will bring this certified status across with them, which will be most important when a particular UPA tournament only allows participation by Certified Observers.

IS OBSERVING FOR YOU?

Only you can answer that question. It’s certainly one great way to support the sport you love and bring added value to the players’ and spectators’ experiences. Some of the attributes that we’ve found in the strongest Observers are: 1. Excellent rules knowledge. Not just by playing, but from reading the rule book and understanding and applying the rules.

2. Attitude: Professional, focused, and confident. Always looking to help the players, but never to control the game.

3. Understand the game at a high level. Typically this is gained from playing at this level, such as in the UC or UPA club or college series. 4. Bonus: Previous experience as a sports official (hockey/soccer/basketball/football referee), although Observing is a different job.

UPCOMING OBSERVER CERTIFICATION CLINICS

In an effort to build our number of

available and competent Observers, especially in the short term to support this year’s Club Championship tournament in Sherbrooke Quebec, we have initially planned the following Observer Certification Clinics: • July 3-4 – Montreal Jazz Tournament – Montreal • July 17-18 – Comedy of Errors – Montreal • July 17-18 – No Borders – Ottawa

HOW TO BECOME AN OBSERVER

If you would like to further look into becoming an Observer, and especially if you’d like to attend one of these clinics and be an Observer at this year’s CUC, please send an email to observing@ canadianultimate.com/. It’s absolutely the best seat in the house. »U
