ANGELS AND DEMONS (12)
Three years have passed since the Da Vinci code exploded onto our screens and its popularity
quickly resulted in Angels & Demons being given the green light for production. The actor’s strike
coupled with their schedules resulted in this being put back time and again before the release
finally came. I found the prolonged wait very frustrating. Having read all of Dan Brown’s books at
this point, Angels & Demons was head and shoulders above the others and was a prequel to the code,
but I am here to review the film, so let’s move on…
Robert Langden (Tom Hanks) everybody’s favourite symbologist returns for a new adventure challenging
the bragging rights between science and fiction. When a secret society called the Illuminati steal
a capsule of anti matter from a secret underground laboratory, they have only one aim – to plant
the bomb and wipe Vatican City off the face of the earth.
Their timing is no coincidence, the pope has just died
suddenly and the cardinals are in conclave where a new
pope is to be elected. The Illuminati however have no
intention of letting proceedings complete and part of
the plan sees the four candidates kidnapped and up
until midnight, on the hour, one will be killed and left in
a pre arranged historical site in the City. Langdon and
scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet ZuItrer) have a race
against time to stop that from happening.
With plenty of fast paced action and suspense Demons
does create a better watch than The Code and director,
Ron Howard has toned the book down to its essentials to keep things moving.
There are times when it reverts to overdrawn explanations, but it is hard to see how
it could have been avoided without dumming down too much. Our heroes also find
the answers to their clues a little too easily, and the ending is pretty preposterous
too – but sadly, that’s Hollywood! And just when you thought you saw the last of
Robert Langdon, Dan Brown’s third book in the series, “The Last Symbol,” is in
book stores now. No doubt that the film version isn’t far behind, which means Mr
Langdon and some gorgeous assistant will be back on the big screen in no time.
