OCTAGON: PHOTOGRAPHS BY KEVIN LYNCH
– 1100 & 1001 Kettner Blvd. between Broadway and B St.
Blood, sweat and tears are said to be a man’s medals of accomplishment. Few extreme sports
demonstrate this better than mixed martial arts—a fighting realm that makes use of an eight-
sided cage called an Octagon. In the gritty and powerful photographs taken by Kevin Lynch, who
was given a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the
emotions of a contingent of fighters were captured in their raw state and are now displayed at the
Museum of Contemporary Art – San Diego. A shock-inspiring arrangement of before-and-after
photographs of the competitors (prior to and following their matches) highlights the focal point
of the exhibition. Using a globe light in order to best simulate locker-room lighting, Lynch’s por-
traits of the fighters depict the kind of intensity that’s required of them as well as the vulnerability
that is constricted out of them.
General admission for adults is $10. Military personnel and seniors pay $5 and students ages 26
