SoundS are in Session for September
by jeff chandler
There is an incredible amount of new music falling like September leaves this
month. From four of the most sensational female artists in popular music to a wide
variety of rock, pop, blues and electronic…grab your school gear as class is in ses-
sion and we have a lot to cover. Pencils ready? Let us begin. The original “queen of
the night” Whitney Houston is back on track with her legendary career with the
release of I Look to You. Her official website has already streamed the full release and
this ultimate diva is back in business with her phenomenal vocal qualities in check.
Technically, her return debuted on August 31… but not mentioning her last month,
I wouldn’t hear of not writing about Ms. Houston now. With a worldwide fan base, it’s
time to trust Whitney and her talent once more. To kick off the month on September
1, here is a duo you probably haven’t heard of yet but for those who want something
new and off the beaten path, their album is a haunting, poetic and musically captivat-
ing collection of songs about women called Villainess by Misty Roses. Lead singer
Robert Conroy describes this work as “pretty music with a dark edge.” Boys Like Girls
return with their second release titled Love Drunk out on September 8 and kick
musical ass as always. Stay out of the mosh pit! Scarlett Johansson singing? What is
the world coming to? Actually she has quite the sensual voice and is joined by Pete
Yorn in a great collection of rhythm and blues on their release called Break Up… that
you can break into on September 8. A selection of sleek and stylish electro-pop and
grand rock opera in the tradition of Queen comes your way on September 14 with
Muse and their new CD called The Resistance. These guys are amazing and have been
creating innovative music since 1994. Rock on with a grand dose of Muse. Just who is
Butterfly Boucher? She’s a cool Australian singer who presents her second release
here in the U.S. called Scary Fragile on September 15. If you dig Tori Amos, Butterfly
Boucher possesses a similar intricately lyrical style and smooth vocals. Are you ready?
Mariah Carey is releasing her Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel on September 15. Initially
slated for an August release, our perfect diva wanted to make sure everything was
just perfect. I’m sure the results will be extraordinary. September 22 the one and only
Mika returns with his sophomore release titled The Boy Who Knew Too Much. “We Are
Golden” is the first single and you can catch it on
mikasounds.com. On September 20,
one of the most well known rock bands return with new music. Pearl Jam presents
Backspacer. This one is available exclusively at Target while Alice In Chains is ready
to go with Black Gives Way to Blue which is available exclusively everywhere on Sep-
tember 29. Remember these lyrics? “You’re as cold as ice. You’re willing to sacrifice our
love? If you do, it’s time to rejoice in new music from Foreigner and head to Walmart
on September 29 for their new one called Can’t Slow Down. “Celebrate…we’re gonna
have a celebration!” Madonna has created a double-disc set of greatest hits and also
includes two new songs for her Celebration that is also set for release on September
29. Now for the grand finale…at least for me…on September 29, the woman with the
most, James Brolin’s wife, the amazing voice of the last forty years returns once more
with a new set of jazz standards with a back-up group of excellent musicians led by
Diana Krall. Have you guessed yet? She really needs no introduction. The woman in
question is Barbra Streisand and the CD is titled Love is the Answer. Yes class, Barbra
Streisand is my star pupil for this session of sounds of September. Until October…
keep all the music spinning as we head into autumn.
