The 39 Steps
Following in step with Hitchcock’s 1935 film, The 39 Steps is drama, sus-
pense and humor all rolled into one. Coming straight from Broadway, the
show boasts a cast of four playing 150 roles. Audiences will be impressed
with La Jolla Playhouse’s cleverly staging including trains, planes and
police chases. What’s an innocent man (mistaken for an international spy)
to do?
The 39 Steps plays now – September 13 at La Jolla Playhouse’s Mandell Weiss Theatre.

I Love You Because
Calling all Jane Austen fans. I Love You Because is a modern, musical
retelling of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It’s a lighthearted “boy loses
girl, gets another girl, girl gets boy, girl goes back, boy changes mind,
girl changes mind, boy comes back, figure it all out-in-the-end” love
story. Yes, it’s a story that’s been around since 1813 but this version is set
in New York City. What will grab you is the acclaimed music and lyrics by
Ryan Cunningham and Joshua Salzman. And lest we forget, a lot of fiery
romance that you wouldn’t read in Austen’s novel and some fun gender-
twists. Adult language and sexual content.
I Love You Because plays September 5 – 27 at North Coast Repertory Theatre. For tickets
and more information call 858.481.1055.
The Andrews Brothers
The story centers on three talented, but unknown USO stagehands
volunteering to help the wartime cause. Everyone is excited about
the arrival of the Andrews Sisters. But a case of the measles cause the
beloved Andrews Sisters to miss their Pacific Island USO appearance. So
our three stagehands must save the day! By becoming cross-dressing
understudies—they get their big break. Aside from great hilarity, this is
timeless entertainment, with most of the show’s songs deemed great
American standards.
The Andrews Brothers plays September 3 - November 8 at Lawrence Welk Theatre. For
tickets and more information call 1.888.802.7469.
Spamalot
Broadway San Diego brings us the 2005 Tony Award® winner for Best
Musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot; an outrageous musical comedy,
“lovingly ripped off from the 1975 film classic Monty Python and The Holy
Grail.” Like the film it is a highly irreverent parody of King Arthur and his
court, but it differs from the film in many ways, with added parodies of
Broadway and Las Vegas.
Directed by Tony Award-winner Mike Nichols, the script was written
by Eric Idle with music and lyrics by the Grammy Award-winning team
of Mr. Idle and John Du Prez. Spamalot begins with King Arthur looking
to recruit knights for his Round Table. Once his team is found, he and his
knights head off to Camelot. Arthur’s Castle, which resembles Las Vegas’s
Excalibur resort, comes complete with showgirls, oversized dice and Lady
of the Lake as the Castle’s headliner (in full Cher get-up!). You know it only
gets wilder from there. They then must embark on their quest for the Holy
Grail complete with flying cows, killer rabbits, beautiful show girls, show-
stopping musical numbers and occasional improvisation by the actors.
For mature audiences only due to strong language and gestures.
Spamalot plays September 8-13 at the San Diego Civic Theatre. For tickets and more
information call 619.570.1100.
