Johnson, Gerald “Jerry”
Rev. Gerald “Jerry” Johnson passed away October 21, 2008 in Sullivan, Missouri. He was born July 22, 1935 in
Evansville, Indiana. After graduating from high school, he married Myrna Darlene Erdman on July 8, 1955.
He served in the United States Air Force and later attended William Jewell College and Saint Paul School of
Theology. As an ordained United Methodist pastor, he served the Galt Circuit, Kansas City Marlborough, Sullivan
Grace, Eureka, Houston, Paris/Madison and as part-time chaplain at BJC Hospital in Sullivan. He was active in
storytelling and gave numerous seminars at colleges and schools. He often dressed as John Wesley or a signer of
the Constitution. He was active in a number of organizations and community groups including the MO-TELL
Storytelling Association, Rotary, and Ministerial Alliance. He began the senior nutrition site at Marlborough
United Methodist Church. Myrna lives in Sullivan, Missouri.
Leonard, Clark
Clark Leonard was born April 4, 1920 in Salem, Missouri and passed away July 27, 2008 also in Salem. Clark was
united in marriage to Verda Kautz on June 9, 1946. Clark was a graduate of Salem High School. He received a
bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia and a Master of Divinity from Garrett Theological
Seminary. Clark served in the United States Army during World War II. He was the minister of Salem United
Methodist Church in Ladue for 30 years and served as superintendent of the Columbia/Mexico and St. Louis South
Districts. He was elected the mayor of Salem in April 1990 and held the position for eight years. Clark was a 32nd
Degree Mason and was also active in the American Legion and Rotary. Verda lives in Salem, Missouri.
Lucas, Arthur M. “Art”
Arthur M. Lucas was born August 10, 1947 and died January 10, 2009. On August 9, 1969, he married Lou
Matthews. Art established hospital chaplaincy and ethics programs as well as the Samaritan Counseling Center
at the Heartland Health Center in Saint Joseph, Missouri. He helped found professional chaplaincy in Latvia
and Kenya. In Saint Louis, he was Director of Spiritual Care at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and worked nationally as
consultant and trainer for United States Navy chaplains. His career as hospital chaplain and United Methodist
minister spanned 1976 to 2009.
Mann, Robert L.
Robert Mann was born in Boulder, Colorado, February 10, 1917 and passed away October 11, 2008. He married
Shirley Myrdell Danson September 4, 1938. Shirley died November 13, 1998. Robert was raised in Rolla,
Missouri, graduated from Rolla High School and the School of the Mines. He received his BS in Divinity from
Perkins School of Theology in 1951. He served the Wentzville-O’Fallon, East Prairie, North Hills, Valley Park-
Cresent Lewis Chapel, Linn-Bonnots Mill, the Vienna Circuit, Alton-Couch, Palmyra-Mt. Vernon, California-
Clarksburg, Willow Springs (shared ministry with Presbyterians) and Hornersville-Cardwell United Methodist
charges in Missouri. He had served the Bynum-Malone charge in the Waxahachie District, Central Texas
Conference, while a student at Perkins. Robert retired in 1982. He and Shirley lived in Sullivan before moving to
Columbia.
Pence, Charles D.
Rev. Charles D. Pence passed away March 8, 2009. Charlie was born March 5, 1929 in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
At the age of 16 he was converted at a revival held in his home church and felt the call to preach. He served the
Amsterdam, Virginia, Appleton City, Montrose, Bolivar, Neosho and North Kansas City First United Methodist
Churches, beginning in 1962 and retiring in 1994. He and Joyce were married December 24, 1949. Joyce lives in
Kansas City, Missouri.
