Interweaving Mission and Evangelism Plenary
Presenter: Bishop Hope Morgan Ward, Mississippi Annual Conference
Bishop Ward will address the theme of changing lives through mission by relaying the experiences and insights
she gained following the hurricane and rebuilding of the gulf coast. During her discussion, she will explain ways in
which congregations can interweave mission and evangelism and offer information on ways to invite those outside
of the community of faith to serve to relieve suffering alongside church teams.
Outwardly Focused Youth Ministry John Q
Presenter: Beverly Boehmer, Director of Youth and College Ministries
There are two ways to become an outwardly focused youth ministry: missions and reaching other youth with the
Good News and love of Jesus Christ. This will be a practical workshop and you will hear from youth themselves.
Permission or Forgiveness: Seeking the Freedom to be Outwardly Focused Illinois
Presenter: Rev. Jim Preisig, Senior Pastor Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church
The greatest impediment to outreach in established congregations is stubborn opposition to change. People equate
the forms of faith and worship with faith itself, and therefore cling tenaciously to the past and perceive any change
in focus or function as a dire threat to what they hold dear. How do you deal with this subtle form of idolatry that
so often paralyzes our churches and threatens the future of our shared ministry? Do you seek permission or secure
forgiveness? Or do you simply give up and watch the churches we love petrify and die?
Jim Preisig will discuss and offer recommendations on rewriting the DNA of a congregation so as to shift the focus
outward and in the process bring inward renewal and revitalization of our established congregations. He speaks
from experience.

Welcoming the Stranger (Mystery Church Shoppers) - Colorado
Presenter: Melanie Smollen, Hendrickson Business Advisors
In today’s society, individuals have many choices and churches that compete for their time on any given Sunday.
A pastor once said, “We know why someone visits our church and they decide to stay, because we get to ask them.
What we don’t know is why someone visits our church and never returns.” This workshop will introduce a tool
that church leaders can employ to strengthen their outward focus and address these issues from the “unchurched”
visitor’s perspective.
