Around the cattle Daisy was polite and effective which made the cattle comfortable
around her also. This allowed us to work livestock anywhere together in familiar or unfa-
miliar settings. We worked at the yards in auction barns, with the vet that would process
the sale cattle at the end of auctions, brandings, day working (going to various ranches
on a ‘as needed’ basis) and cow-calf operations. She would also perform working inter-
views as I interviewed for ranch jobs. I was offered two jobs on ranches in part because
of what I could accomplish when partnered up with Daisy. She was as much as a part
of putting bread and butter on the table as I was.

Sometimes we were needed to

help out on ranches where the
owner had a trigger happy finger
when it came to dogs around
their livestock. When we helped
at places who did not like dogs, I
would explain to them that Daisy
and I were a package deal. Hav-
ing said that, I understood that if
Daisy ‘messed up’ in any way
while there, she would be shot on
the spot. I never once worried
that Daisy would be shot or that
she would be hurt by the cattle
(which often were not dog broke).
She showed me she could walk
the razors edge of pressure and
release with cattle so that she
was real help. She didn’t slow us
down any because she conserved
her energy with polite and effec-
tive cattle work. She left a good
impression. I’d like to think she
was a bit of an ambassador for
working dogs in general to those
places who don’t think dogs be-
long around livestock.
