The dogs and I
work in all
weather--summer
heat, mud, rain,
snow and ice. I've been unsuccessful in training geese to take weekends or holidays off
so this is a 365 day-a-year job and we work from dawn to dusk. We do not have a set
schedule because the geese would learn what time we showed up -- they are not stupid
birds, but they are lazy. Geese learn if they go elsewhere, we don’t harass them. Most
people that ask about me about Goose Busters, ask: “When you chase them, where do
they go?” I tell them, they go some place else and hopefully someplace where they will
call me for the service.

I never get bored Goose Bustin’ with my crew. No day is like the next and I must be on
my toes at all times. I’ve come to know which of my dogs does best on which property
or in what instance. Some are long legged and cover ground quicker, some work best
alone, some work near people without interfering and some work better with other dogs
or as a group. Although no dog can out-swim a goose, I have dogs that are better swim-
mers than others. I also have back-up for chasing geese off lakes and ponds which is a
remote control boat. Occasionally I will use a lightweight kayak in conjunction with a
dog, either in the kayak or swimming along side with a doggie life vest. My dogs are in
shape, they love to work and love to learn. They often argue who's 'turn' it is to go chase
those geese and bark their frustration whether we going out of the house to the van or
out of the van at a client. I cannot stress enough the importance of the traits I've come
to love in the ACD. I work and train the crew constantly --at home, in the field, in obedi-
ence and agility classes.

My crew responds to my commands, signals and whistle cues and must ignore many
distractions such as other dogs, people who may be on a golf course or students on a
