in the morning they are fed a small amount. They will spend the rest of the day in their
runs with indoor accommodation. They are rotated so that they can wander around and
come in the house. At night they all sleep in the house, some are caged and some are loose.
They are fed their main meal in the late afternoon.
What should people who are interested in this breed know before they bring one of
these dogs into their homes?
That they are strong‐willed and if you don't have a sense of humour don't have a Cattle
Dog. They can be territorial and they need lots of socialization particularly around 6
months when they can become very windy as hormones kick in. It is also difficult to be‐
lieve how much, for a smooth coated breed, that they moult!
Is there anything interesting that the breeding community (for your breed) is col
lectively working on?
Nothing at this time that I am aware of. The last thing, of course, was the development of
the DNA test for PRA
Do you feel the current AKC/UKC standard is adequate?
I am not all that conversant with the American Kennel Club's Breed Standard. The one
here in the UK has been in place without much alteration for about 25 years when the ACD
first arrived here. It is quite closely based on the Australian Standard and I think most
people in the breed feel that it fits the bill adequately.
