Raymond and Beverly many times for their parting with Daisy, but more importantly for
their caref
ul breeding that involves rigorous culling to produce working heelers that are ex-
perts at what they do.
The ambassador:
the auction barn. I was working with a vet after a cattle auction. We were running the
sale cattle through the chute when one cow came out of the chute ready to eat some-
one’s shorts. An unsuspecting fella came around the corner just as the fuzzed up cow
shot out of the chute. The cow rammed the fella against a solid wall and was crushing
his torso where his vital organs were. Daisy got in there and distracted the cow so that
the man had time to get to safety. He was injured from the incident, but his injuries
could have proved fatal had Daisy not intervened. She was a real life saver that day in
the community she worked within. She went on to save my life three times and attack
an intruder who was trying to break in to my house at 1 in the morning. The intruder al-
most killed her but she recovered and she continued her amazing life despite him.
Partners for life:
Some brandings require an over night stay because the branding will last more than one
day. At one particular branding Daisy and I came to help at, the owners did not allow
animals in their house. This was a problem for me because my dogs always sleep on
the floor in the room I sleep in without exception (I’ll explain why later).
The day Daisy entered
my world, she wove
herself into the fabric
of my days and nights
with livestock so
smoothly I realized it
was like she could
read my mind. She
partnered up real
tight with me and eve-
rything flowed the way
it should. This meant
I was totally free to
focus on cattle work
rather than ‘baby-sit’
her in her work. She
became an extension
of my movements and
my work.
