“Toby”
Toby came to me as a po-
tential show dog and per-
formance dog, but it was
clear to me from the start
that he had so much more
potential than that. He fin-
ished his CH very quickly
despite his “purple” coat. I
toyed with the idea of train-
ing him for obedience com-
petition, but he always
seemed bored by it, his
true love was working with
people. He earned his CGC and TDI at a local obedience club, and then went to visit chil-
dren at our library’s read to the dogs program. Toby loved to go camping and backpacking
with us and gladly carried water bottles and dog food in his own back pack. So, after
about 6 months of extra training as a mobility service dog and being exposed to every pos-
sible store, restaurant and hospital situation possible, Toby started his new job.
He’s now a certified Mobility Assistance Service Dog, and completed the Assistance Dogs
International Public Access Test with flying colors. He currently lives with and works for
Steve and Sandra Cline of Fishers, Indiana. Steve uses Oxygen due to cardiac and pulmo-
nary complications. So, Toby’s main job is to help carry the portable Oxygen tanks in his
pack while they are out. At home, Toby is a valuable companion for Steve and keeps him
company. He’s constantly learning new jobs and will fetch the phone and bark in alarm to
get help if Steve asks him to or if Toby is worried about him. Toby will find, fetch and give
the cell phone to Steve if he falls, and he’s also learning to press an emergency pendant
