An artist’s impression of the Anantara Al Madina A’Zarqa Resort & Spa in Oman, which is inspired by Arabian architecture

New chapter in Arabian nights

A glut of new hotels is due in the Gulf this year, bolstering the options for Middle East travel. Tom Jordan reports

ANANTARA AL MADINA. A’ZARQA RESORT & SPA. Sohar, Oman

Set to open in late 2011, this is Anantara’s first property in Oman. The resort is on the north coast of Muscat and will have 122 guestrooms, including six villas with plunge pools. Architecturally reflecting the Arabian low-rise whitewashed style, its on-site restaurants will serve Italian and Thai food, there will be pool and beach bars and a full signature Anantara Spa. Selling tips: This is a major new five-star leisure option for Oman. Less than an hour’s drive from Muscat’s Seeb International airport, it is also only a four-hour drive (or short flight) from the UAE, where Anantara

has two established properties and another two due to open by the end of 2011, meaning there is the option of combining it to make a twin-centre stay. ■ anantara.com

Abu Dhabi’s Hyatt Capital Gate will open later this year

INTERCONTINENTAL DOHA. West Bay Doha, Qatar

Due in late 2011, this 60-storey tower will house 540 rooms in the city centre. Its con- ference centre and Club Lounge will mainly serve high-end business travellers. There will be residential suites for longer stays, while high level restaurants and a 46th-floor outdoor pool will have impressive views. Selling tips: A good option for business travellers, the hotel is centrally located and near the city’s diplomatic area. It’s not on the coast, but as it is an hour’s flight from the UAE it could make a business/leisure twin-centre. ■ ichotelsgroup.com

HYATT CAPITAL GATE. Abu Dhabi, UAE

The 189 rooms of the Hyatt Capital Gate will occupy levels 18 to 33 of a soon-to-be iconic, glass high-rise tower that will lean at around 18 degrees. Part of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, it will be a major luxury business hotel. Relaxation options include an elevated infinity spa, outdoor pool and Jacuzzi. It is due to open in mid-2011. Selling tips: Handy for all the city’s main attractions; next to the exhibition centre; 15 minutes from the airport and near new leisure attractions Yas and Saadiyat Island. ■ abudhabi.capitalgate.hyatt.com
