Time to seas the moment
The UK ferry market has picked up in the past year. Dave Richardson talks to the ferry companies capitalising on the woes of the airline industry
ollowing last April’s ash cloud crisis and the big freeze in December, ferry operators are hoping the halo effect will continue and some of the passengers forced to use them back then will become loyal customers.

Many passengers on Irish Sea and Channel Islands routes switched to sea travel during the crises, and Stena Line claims it picked up an extra 7,500 passengers over the Christmas
period, while Irish Ferries ran an extra Holyhead- Dublin departure on Christ- mas Eve to get people home. Stena carried 60,000 more passengers because of the ash cloud, but the increase wasn’t temporary. It took around 50,000 more passengers over the summer.
