This week’s contenders: high street v internet v newspaper advert ShoplatchWorldchoice Travel

Peakes Travel Elite Mardol

I was immediately approached and shown various Channel Islands

brochures. A search afterwards did not produce many options, so I was asked if dates were flexible. I was then offered The Savoy, Hotel Pomme D’or and Hotel Metropole, which all fitted my criteria. Flights departed Liverpool – recom- mended as more cost effective than Manchester and Birming- ham. Boat trips to other islands were suggested, though ideas for Jersey would have been welcome. Car hire and insurance were prompted.

First impressions were good, as I was greeted and offered a seat. I was

told Jersey was busy in June, advised to avoid the flower festival period and asked if I could be flexible with my dates. St Helier was suggested for me as a first-timer. I was offered the four-star Pomme D’or and told guests can use the pool at a neighbouring hotel. Car hire and insurance were mentioned. A positive experience, though the consultant was frustrated they could only find one option and I would have liked to have seen more pictures of the hotel.

Jersey Travel Service jerseytravelservice.com

The site looked basic and its use of photos unimaginative –

but it was straightforward and I swiftly entered my details using dropdown menus. I was directed to a choice of flights then on selecting one waited 12 seconds for a list of available hotels. Eight fell within my price bracket, some could be booked direct, others needed phone confirmation. There were details of my preferred hotel, the Radisson Blu, and images but it was unclear which room class they were. Car hire and insurance prompts were given.

This week’s winner:Worldchoice Travel

The mystery shopper was impressed by Wendy’s confidence and the choices on offer

Although the service and quote from Peakes was good, Worldchoice found three suitable hotels, all within budget. The consultant, Wendy, was friendly and confident and happy to play with dates, suggesting a midweek departure to get the best price. They also made a personal recommendation on the hotel. Jersey Travel Service had a wide choice, but many inappropriate options were offered. I preferred 3Xtravel to the web firm, as the price and location were good. Worldchoice’s Wendy offered seven nights’ B&B at the Savoy in St Helier, flying from Liverpool on June 10, at £1,242 with Premier Holidays.

I selected this company from an advert in The Sun because

it mentioned Jersey. The con- sultant was friendly and asked questions. They searched, then offered me a suitable option, though this holiday was eight rather than seven nights as the hotel offers every fourth night free. I was told the hotel, the Radisson Blu, was within budget, though taking my car on the ferry would cost extra. The consultant was knowledge- able about the area although didn’t mention where my ferry would depart from.
