IBBEAN EXPERIENCE IN TOBAGO


Frederica Brooks-Adams, director of tourism for the Division of Tourism and Transportation at the Tobago House of Assembly reveals why Tobago sells itself


and August because you get a bit of everything – the harvest, the Heritage Festival and the hatching of our baby turtles. Although this is in our so called ‘wet season’ which runs from June to December, you hardly get any rain, except for November, the wettest month of the year. But, when it rains, you just get one or two hours of heavy showers, and it’s like liquid sunshine because it’s still warm!


WHAT’S THE BEST WAY FOR VISITORS TO EXPERIENCE TOBAGO’S CULTURE? In the early days, it wasn’t possible to capture all of Tobago’s rich culture in books, so our elders created this ritual of storytelling. About 20 years ago, we started to have a Heritage Festival, where each village re-enacts something that happened there according to our predecessors’ stories. It runs for two weeks from the middle of July to early August.


AND WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT? Well, I’d say any time of year! However a great time to visit is between May


WHAT KIND OF HOTEL OFFERING CAN TRAVELLERS EXPECT? Our offering is from 4* beachfront hotels to affordable 3* properties and unique family run B&Bs. The latter offer the opportunity to live like a local, alongside their owners, and guests can go liming with them or accompany them to the local festivals and events.


AND HOW ABOUT AIRLINE CONNECTIVITY? As well as Thomas Cook’s new Manchester route, BA and Virgin already fly to Tobago from Gatwick. The total number of airline seats each week coming from Europe to Tobago is approximately 2,500. We also have virtually 24 hour inter-island

flights between Trinidad and Tobago, it’s a 20-minute journey, a quick hop, so Tobago also makes a wonderful overnight trip for those on holiday in Trinidad.


WHAT MAKES TOBAGO APPEAL TO UK TRAVELLERS? British travellers come to Tobago and unearth its hidden treasures – each day is like a voyage of discovery. The island is really the last secret of the Caribbean. I would encourage anyone to come here because it’s affordable, accessible and authentic, it’s not overly touristy, it sells itself.
