As the college goes from strength to strength, we discover the history behind Galligan Beauty College and the difference it has made for professional beauty therapists in Ireland.
When Kay Galligan, a beauty entrepreneur, opened one of Ireland’s first beauty salons located in Portobello, Dublin, in the early 70’s, she was quick to realise the lack of education opportunities available to therapists wanting to learn in their home country. Trained at the London School of Beauty, Kay understood that although Ireland’s beauty industry was fledgling at the time, it was set to grow as the demand for salon-based beauty procedures increased. This revealed an obvious niche in the market for a college which would educate budding therapists right in the heart of Ireland itself.
From this, mother-of-four Kay, who is widely regarded for her business acumen, established a beauty wholesale and retailing business and

brought revolutionary new beauty products to Ireland such as strip waxing, gel nails and tweezer epilation and founded The Galligan Beauty College in 1978 with the help of her two daughters, Lorraine and Careena.
College offerings
A family business now run by the daughters themselves, Galligan Beauty College offers a number of beauty therapy qualifications including the CIDESCO International Diploma, British CIBTAC and ITEC Diplomas which both Lorraine and Careena hold, plus post- graduate courses including Teaching Diploma, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, IPL and Laser, Advanced Electrolysis and Make-up Artistry. The college also offers hairdressing and barbering courses and City & Guild qualifications.
Constant growth within the company has helped the college climb the education ladder, now recognised as one of Ireland’s longest established third level beauty colleges, with an outstanding reputation both in its home country and abroad for the high success rates achieved in their internationally accredited beauty therapy courses.
“The most popular Post Graduate courses we offer today are: IPL and Laser Diploma Course, Teacher Training Course and of course the ever popular PG CIDESCO (post graduate) Course,” says Lorraine. “These courses provide a depth of
knowledge and expertise second to none. With the CIDESCO qualification, graduates are eligible to work in over 33 countries worldwide.”
Hard work rewards success
While the variety of courses available is definitely a contributing factor to the success of the college, there are numerous other ways in which the college operates to ensure the therapist’s experience and education is second to none.
Each course available from the college is taught with a consistently low pupil- to-lecturer ratio which means that students receive the one-to-one tuition and encouragement they need to succeed. The college also owns a working salon which is available for students to gain essential practical experience of what it’s like to work in the industry first hand – an invaluable tool. Plus, with its central location, based on Grafton Street in Dublin, the college is both attractive and accessible.
“We have focused accreditation, development and are constantly expanding to drive new standards in education to keep ahead of competition,” explains Lorraine. This is achieved through monitoring trends
