Thanks to leading companies investing in research and development, 21st Century spray tanning is now one versatile service.
Not every beauty treatment can adapt to suit a number of surroundings, yet spray tanners can be found in high-end Spas to high-street salons and even your client’s own living room thanks to the mobile equipment that is on offer.
Therefore, when choosing the right spray tan equipment the first step is to take into account the nature and location of your business.
If you are salon-based, a more permanent booth design with such features as built-in lighting and a whisper-quiet, air-flow extraction system may be more suitable to ensure your clients receive a comfortable tanning experience.
“If you tan frequently or have a room that you are able to use solely for tanning, a booth would be the best option as it can be set up permanently,” says Kissed by Mii’s Shelley Henderson. “If there is a high demand for tanning in your area, or if you are doing five or more spray tans a week, a booth is definitely a worthwhile investment as it delivers the most professional service and there is minimal set up required before each client.”
“Extraction booths are now smaller and more compact than ever so they take up less space in the treatment room,” Shelley adds. “Some systems also have removable sides, making it even easier to store the booth when not in use.”
However if you have limited salon space to play with or are a mobile therapist, pop-up booths and tents will allow you to set-up and perform treatments with ease. Thanks to their ingenious designs, many of these can be inflated and deflated in just 30 seconds. They also work to provide a secure area for spray tanning, protecting your environment from overspray, and can be machine- washed and packed away at the end of the treatment until you are ready to use it again.
“A popular choice certainly for mobile or home-based tanners is pop-up tents,” says MoroccanTan Education Ambassador, Nicola Badmus. “They take up less room and are also great if you have a multi-function treatment room without the space to have a spray booth permanently erected. They are easy to clean and fold down in to a neat and compact size for storage.”
One thing to remember is that pop-up booths and tents don’t feature an integrated extraction system, so this will also need to be added to your list of purchases.
“Whether you’re mobile, home or salon- based, a good quality extraction system is vital,” advises Nicola. “Not only to help keep your working environment as clean as possible by drawing away over spray, but also from a health perspective for both yourself and your client to limit the amount of ultra-fine spray particles lingering in the air. available for mobile tanners or therapists with limited space right through to full spray station booths.”
Customise and control The latest spray tan solutions are available in a variety of colours to suit your client’s own personal tone and taste. However in order to deliver that bespoke glow, selecting the right spray tan machine is a must.
Manual spray tanning offers two main types of systems to choose from – Low Volume Low Pressure (LVLP) and High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP). The HVLP system uses a turbine that atomises the solution into a fine mist that is sprayed onto skin, and due to the higher volume delivered, is popular with busy salons with high tanning turnover, whereas a LVLP system uses a lower pressure to deliver an even finer mist and is ideal for precise control.
So what other factors should you take into consideration when selecting your spray tan system?
With more demand for personalised colours and the current trend of tan contouring, look for those which provide you with customisation through such features as variable air flow and adjustable spray tan nozzle.
“Also look for a machine that will be comfortable and practical to use – what’s the handle like, how easy is it to keep your machine clean, are the control functions easy to use?,” suggests Nicola.
Shelley adds: “Think about what you can afford to pay for equipment, the cost per treatment, how much you will be able to charge and how many treatments you will need to perform to pay off the investment.”
