Advertorials Astute Electronics first European company to be
certified to Mil/Aero anti-counterfeit standard AS 6081 First company worldwide to be certified both in Europe and USA
Astute Electronics, the leading supplier of electronic components and value added services, has announced that is has gained certification to AS 6081, the SAE Aerospace Standard that addresses counterfeit mitigation which is designed to provide a very high level of protection for companies in the aerospace and defence industries. Astute is the first British and first European company to gain certification and only the fourth company in the world to achieve this. Astute is also the first company worldwide to have more than one location certified (UK and USA).
AS 6081 standardizes practices and methods to mitigate the risks of purchasing and supplying fraudulent/counterfeit electronic parts. It covers the following activities:
• Identify reliable sources to procure parts;
• Assess and mitigate risk of distributing fraudulent/counterfeit parts; • Control suspect or confirmed fraudulent/counterfeit parts;
• Report suspect and confirmed fraudulent/counterfeit parts to other potential users and Authority Having Jurisdiction.
Astute takes testing much farther than simple visual inspection and functional test. The company uses scanning electron microscopy equipment to check to see if the part has the right marking and materials, and also to compare parts against a library of known good parts it has built up. Therefore, if a component shows up with a different material construction it can be identified immediately as a fake.

Horizontal Gecko connectors from Harwin reduce
PCB stacking height; increase design flexibility Hi-rel 1.25mm pitch connector family facilitates mother & daughter board configuration
Harwin, the leading hi-rel connector and SMT board hardware manufacturer, has introduced a horizontal version of its 1.25mm pitch hi-rel Gecko connector, reducing the stacking height of PCBs to just 5.6mm. Available in the standard eight positions - 6, 10, 12, 16, 20, 26, 34 and 50 – the new style also facilitates mother & daughter board configurations.
G125 series connectors offer high performance in a miniature package. The 1.25mm pin spacing results in a 35% space saving over other high- performance connectors such as Micro-D. Connectors can handle 2A per contact and function within a wide temperature range (-65 to
+150degC) and under extreme vibration (Z axis 100g 6m/s). Other features common to the Gecko connector family include polarization points that prevent mis-mating, easy identification of the No 1 position for fast visual inspection and optional latches that allow simple and fast de- latching. Optional special tooling is available for use in confined applications. The horizontal style connectors feature a new mechanical hold-down latching system for additional connection security.
Gecko connectors are available on tape and reel packaging for automated assembly processing.

Mouser gives more bang for your “Buck” with
Analog Devices’ ADP5301 Step-Down Regulators Mouser Electronics, Inc. is now stocking the ADP5301 high-efficiency, ultralow power step- down regulators from Analog Devices. Part of Analog Device’s comprehensive line of power management solutions, the ADP5301 are compact, ultralow-power buck regulators that enable designers to extend their battery life in portable devices with one of the highest ultra- light-load power conversion efficiencies in the industry. Delivering a 90 percent efficiency rating and consuming only 180 nA of quiescent current, the ADP5301 provides maximum power and battery life for longer periods of time, making these devices an ideal solution for a variety of Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
Analog Devices ADP5301 high-efficiency, ultralow power step-down regulators, available from Mouser Electronics, provide an input start-up voltage range from 2.15 V to 6.5 V, enabling designers to incorporate a variety of battery sources or other power sources and architectures. The ADP5301 devices feature an integrated voltage supervisory function that increases overall system reliability, and the devices’ output voltage is selectable from 0.8 V to 5.0 V through an external VID resistor and factory fuse. The total solution only requires four tiny external components to help meet even the most demanding board space requirements.

AWS Electronics invests to support double digit
growth in lower cost manufacturing centre Slovakia facility now included dedicated automotive line
AWS Electronics Group, one of Europe’s leading specialist electronics manufacturing services providers, has announced double digit year on year growth at its facility in Námestovo, Slovakia, which was set up to offer a cost-competitive manufacturing option for markets that are especially price- conscious. The facility has just seen a further expansion and now has 40,000 ft² floor space to cope with the growth it is experiencing - further investment and expansion is planned.
Explains AWS’ CEO Paul Deehan: “We now have 180 employees at the Námestovo plant and that figure will rise to over 200 by the year end. We have found the workforce to be very loyal and highly committed to continuous quality and productivity improvement. Our staff there have made massive contributions to the layout and development of the facility, of which they are justly proud.” AWS now has six lines and 18 pick and place machines in Slovakia and has just set up a high volume line dedicated to the automotive market.
“Námestovo is a mirror image of our Newcastle-under-Lyme plant in terms of processes and equipment”, adds Deehan. “We also have the same real-time production control system in place across the two facilities, and, of course, Námestovo is fully-approved to ISO 9001, and TS 16949 for automotive markets and ISO 13485 for medical markets.”

Extensive new range of strong, cost effective
DIN rail PCB housing supports from Hylec-APL UL94 V-0 rated; easy to assemble
Hylec-APL, the specialist supplier of electrical components and enclosures, today announced the DIME/M series of cost-effective, high quality DIN rail PCB housing supports. Suitable for PCBs measuring up to 72mm wide, the modules can be clipped together forming an open front DIN rail support for PCBs of between 20 and 177.5mm in length. Longer PCBs can be accommodated by adding extra base elements; for boards carrying heavy components such as transformers and relays, separate foot elements can be used to provide extra support strength.
DIME/M DIN rail PCB support modules are stronger than other products available on the market thanks to thicker wall sections incorporating supporting ribs, claims Hylec-APL. PCB support is a built-in design feature via the end plates and an improved clipping mechanism aids rigidity and simplifies assembly. End sections incorporating integral feet, available for top hat rail designs, reduce assembly time and the number of stock lines required. Separate feet (DIME/M/FE0000SS) are available that fit both G and top hat rail sections.

New ‘Spider’ fibre optic assemblies from OMC
allow light signals to be split or combined Rugged, reliable and inexpensive
OMC, the pioneer in optoelectronic solutions, is now offering a range of ‘Spider’ fibre optic cable assemblies which can both split an optical signal from a single source into several outputs as well as combine multiple inputs onto a single output fibre. This can be useful for sensor applications and precise triggering, among other applications. Previously, designers have been forced to use beam splitters for this purpose, but such devices can be expensive as well as complex to set up. OMC’s new ‘Spider’ fibre optic assemblies, by contrast, are rugged, reliable and much more cost effective. Perhaps the most
important feature is that the spider assemblies can be manufactured to suit the customer’s application, with customer-specific lengths, connectors and numbers of input/output channels.
OMC has 30 years’ experience producing glass and polymer fibre cable assemblies and fibre optic components in a variety of industry standard housings tailored to suit each application. The company also manufactures transmitter and receiver devices and has developed its own proprietary ACA™ (Active Component Alignment) technology which ensures that its fibre-optic data links perform consistently and reliably from link to link, regardless of how they are matched up in production, which is particularly useful when working with challenging optical budgets.
