Southern Manufacturing Preview
A world of electronics in one show
Southern Manufacturing and Electronics returns to FIVE, Farnborough, from February 9th to 11th 2016. After last year’s record-breaking attendance, the UK's longest- running electronics show retains its three-day format

ith its consistent track-record of year-on-year growth stretching back over a decade, the
Southern Electronics Show has a solid claim, echoed by many in the industry, to the distinction of being Britain’s top electronics exhibition. It is certainly the most enduring. Now in the latter years of its second decade, Southern Electronics’ time-proven formula of combining design, production and components in a single show has helped ensure its continued importance. Moreover, its co-location with Southern Manufacturing gives visitors the unique opportunity to address wider manufacturing issues than simply the electronics element. Innovation is amongst the key strengths of UK manufacturing. But to remain agile, a broad field of vision is essential and that is where the unique diversity of suppliers on show at Southern Manufacturing and Southern Electronics really delivers. Around 50 per cent of the total exhibition area of 18,000m² is focused on electronics of one form or another, and this concentration of firms continues to draw international exhibitors and visitors in increasing numbers. The location of the show, within easy striking distance of the M4 corridor and its rich seam of
Seminar Sessions
The free technical seminar programme at Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2016 has been announced. Running over all three days of the show, the programme is an immensely popular feature of the UK’s biggest annual manufacturing technology event. Two programmes run concurrently in two seminar rooms over the three- day event, focusing on general engineering topics and electronics respectively. A total of 28, one-hour sessions will address a huge variety of topics from CE Marking to the latest

electronics firms, not to mention the close proximity of major aerospace manufacturers such as BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin, makes the show a popular showcase for component suppliers and OEM part manufacturers. LEMO returns to Southern to highlight its range of connectors. Among the products showcased will be its T Series connector, designed for outdoor applications, which incorporates the original LEMO push-pull latching connection technology, including an inner sleeve and additional sealing to provide protection against water ingress to IP68 level when mated.
Cosel is one of the world’s leading suppliers of AC-DC Power Supplies and DC-DC Converters. Based in Toyama Japan, Cosel offers a range of AC-DC Power Supplies from 3W to 10kW and DC-DC Converters from 1,5W to 700W. Highlighted at Southern will be the latest addition to its TUNS series of PCB mount AC-DC Power Supplies, the 700W in full brick size with built in PFC. This model offers universal input with output voltages of 12V, 28V and 48V as standard with +/- 20 per cent output voltages for those requiring values outside of this. The TUNS series is ideally suited to harsh
advances in 3D printing and additive manufacturing. Like the show itself, the free technical seminar programme will appeal to anyone involved in engineering, electronics and industry. Highlights of the programme include the return of Stefan Knox of Bang Creations, with his hugely popular look at Good Design and How To Generate Good Ideas. Nick Statham of Fasturns UK looks at the potential cost savings of the Automation of Flexible Manufacturing. Energy is one of the biggest overheads of manufacturing. In Measure Your Energy, Ben Murphy discusses energy saving strategies illustrated with case studies. 3D printing comes under the spotlight when Sav Jeyendran of Canon UK looks at the possibilities of this rapidly

environments or those which do not allow any forced air cooling or where height is limited.
Cooling specialist Aavid Thermalloy will demonstrate its most developments, including HydroSink, an intelligent, innovative, high performance Liquid Cooling System which aims to replace existing air-cooled systems. A process called High Density Die Casting (HDDC), allows Aavid Thermalloy to manufacture near net shape parts with better mechanical and thermal properties compared to traditional die castings, which provide a greater volumetric surface area and which can be employed in custom solutions where
emerging technology. Robin Zhang looks at meeting the legislative requirements for exporting globally, while further advanced manufacturing techniques and materials are examined in An Introduction to 3D Print and Future Applications of Advanced Materials. Ailsa Kaye returns with her popular look at the latest thinking in Best Practice for World Class Manufacturing. The topics of Lean and 6 Sigma are examined in sessions with Tim Scurlock and Barry Byrne. Nick Wainwright of York EMC reviews the latest EU Directives and their implications, and returns for a second session looking at how to make sure your products remain compliant. In Customer Bonding
natural convection is the only chance to cool the system and a traditional extrusion can’t match the requirements.
Some of the other notable firms taking part include Hirose Europe, Ashlea Components, Harwin, Nexus GB, Molex, Selwyn Electronics, TDK-Lambda and Variohm Eurosensor. New for 2016, Yamaichi Electronics debuts with its range of test contactors for semiconductor evaluation, HAST (highly accelerated stress test), HTOL (high temperature operating life) and failure analysis.

Strategies in the Supply Chain, Jonas Haterm of Mobius UK looks at the latest thinking for effective CRM for manufacturers. A second session deals with Supply Chain Analytics, Sales & Operations Planning. Eco- design and the ErP Directive are examined by Alistair McLaughlin of TUV SUD Product service, while Alastair Morris from Pryor Marking Technology - who are also exhibiting at the show - will look at Error Proofing and Traceability. Further sessions cover CE Marking, Patents & Trademarks and more.
