Exhibitor Highlights
On stand E97 LEMO is showcasing its latest connector developments along with products from the new LEMO group company, specialist cable manufacturer, Northwire Industries.
The latest “Tiny Trio” of LEMO connector developments are based around significantly smaller diameter contacts. In the first of the “Tiny Trio” LEMO has been able to squeeze five contacts, each rated to 1.5A, into the 6mm diameter 00 series - ideal for equipment where extremely small, tough connectors are required for handling signals. LEMO are also able to offer 12 contacts in the 0B series, which is only 9.5mm diameter, also, 1.5A continuous rated. The second innovation from LEMO is the waterproof T Series. Based upon the proven B Series connectors, the new T Series incorporates the original LEMO push-pull latching connection technology and includes an inner sleeve and additional sealing to provide protection against water ingress to IP68 level when mated. The new T Series is backwardly compatible with the B Series, with the same socket panel hole diameter, therefore there is no need to change front panel dimensions, and upgraded cable plug assemblies will work with existing sockets. The third development, the MM Series, is the smallest of the LEMO M Series ratchet coupling connectors, the significantly smaller alternatives to MIL C38999 military connectors with up to four contacts in a ruggedised micro housing.
Northwire offer specialist cables for a wide range of industries, including Medical, Test & Measurement, Defence, Robotics and Automation. Quality approvals include ISO9001 and AS9100C.
MicroCare Europe bvba will introduce four new cleaning products to the UK market at the Southern Manufacturing & Electronics Exhibition on stand H67. These new products use novel chemical formulations engineered to clean printed circuit boards, electrical assemblies and associated electronics equipment. Recommended for use in high-volume assembly lines, as well as field service and repair applications, the new cleaning products benefit users with reduced cleaning costs, improve product quality and throughput, and provide long-term compliance to ever-more stringent regulatory obligations. The products include Universal Flux Remover, a highly effective, non-flammable flux
remover for rosin-based, high-temperature, and lead-free fluxes that are increasingly difficult to clean. Universal Contact Cleaner is for cleaning oil, grease and grime from electrical contacts, relays, switches, connectors and circuits. It is fast-drying, non- flammable with excellent materials compatibility. The Polar Flux Remover is an aggressive cleaner for PCB touch-up cleaning of white residues, heavy crusted flux, as well as aged- hardened solder fluxes and pastes. Finally, Tergo High Performance Flux Remover is for high volume production cleaning of circuit boards in automated vapour degreasing systems. The Tergo cleaner uses a unique formulation to help companies’ clean flux from PCBs faster, better and at lower cost while meeting ever-more stringent European regulations.
Each of the new product formulas provide high performance cleaning and user compliance, with increasing global regulations including environmental, health and safety directives. Electronics engineers can specify any of these new cleaning products with confidence as they will provide long-term regulatory compliance in the global markets.
Harwin will be exhibiting rugged reliable connectors and problem-solving PCB hardware solutions at booth E110. Many designers come to Southern Manufacturing from industries that demand the ultimate in reliability. Sectors such as aerospace and defence, mass transportation, oil and gas exploration and industrial control need solutions that will survive extremes of shock, vibration and temperature. Harwin is well equipped to satisfy their interconnect requirements, with a wide portfolio of rugged,

reliable connectors. Debuting at Southern Manufacturing is the company’s latest addition to its 1.25mm pitch hi-rel Gecko family – a horizontal version which reduces the stacking height of PCBs to just 5.6mm. Available in the standard eight positions - 6, 10, 12, 16, 20, 26, 34 and 50 – the new style also facilitates mother & daughter board configurations.
Another side of Harwin’s business is a range of PCB hardware solutions. Often,
relatively simple issues can frustrate good board design and cause manufacturing delays and costs. Traditional methods used to solve cable management, test and EMC problems and battery retention often require secondary, manual processing. Harwin’s EZ BoardWare range comprises surface mount parts that improve manufacturing flexibility, reduce manufacturing costs and improve in field maintenance. All EZ BoardWare components can all be surface mounted along with other components, saving space as well as reducing time and costs, and all are available on tape and reel packaging for automated assembly. Shown for the first time in the UK at Southern Manufacturing will be 13 new EZ-Spring Contacts - ideal for low voltage connections and grounding to prevent RFI/EMI - including C and Positive Stop styles, plus a low 1.1mm profile model.
On stand G98, TTI will be exhibiting their range of products. It’s a fair bet that many visitors to Southern Manufacturing will be working on a project which could be termed Internet of Things. They may prefer to call it by a more clearly-defined term: perhaps they are working on an ‘Industry 4.0 or Smart Factory’ project, or maybe they are creating an ‘Intelligent home/office/workspace’. It could be they are involved in a remote monitoring project, a home diagnostics medical design….IoT covers such a huge number of applications which share one thing in common – they all need sensors. One other thing that every electronics design requires is power. Power is ubiquitous and it is a topic that every engineer must consider during the design stage. Recognising the growing need for specialist support in power and sensors, TTI, the specialist distributor of electronic components, is placing huge emphasis on these sectors, and will show for the first time in the UK at Southern Manufacturing products from key new suppliers. The company has wide stocking portfolios of products from leading names in the power supply arena such as Mean Well, Artesyn and Murata Power Solutions, and in sensors with Honeywell, TE Sensor Solutions and Amphenol Advanced Sensors, and is building a strong business development team to support demand creation for these current and new additions in their portfolio.
Southern Manufacturing & Electronics is billed as the UK’s largest regional manufacturing technology, electronics and subcontracting exhibition. In Mouser’s experience the show covers electronic, electrical and mechanical design and is attended by engineers from SMEs all the way up to the biggest names in industry. That suits Mouser very well because they service all industry sectors and all sizes of companies. Their role is to make new technologies available for designers to base their latest
projects on. They are the New Product Introduction (NPI) distributor that ensures that the latest medical diagnostic tool, wearable electronics device, smart mobile tablet or phablet, piece of test equipment, audio system, automotive control system, in-flight entertainment system is differentiated from its competition because it is using the most- recently-introduced semiconductor. Mouser develop very close working partnerships with suppliers to identify and promote their latest products and technologies: in the last 12 months alone, they have launched over 2,200 NPIs and are committed to increasing that number every year.
Because of the mix of industry sectors that Southern Manufacturing attracts, one focus for this year will be on sensors. This is a very wide and diverse field, but sensors of all types are an enabling technology for IoT implementations. Another focus area will be the design ecosystem: designers need more than just the semiconductor, they need design tools, O/S, development boards, dev kits…and of course all the other supporting componentry that goes to make a project successful.
