ABOVE: Sometimes the best way to see the city is to leave it. The tri-weekly northbound Canadian Pacific freight passes a southbound Metro-North Hudson Line train at Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., on July 20, 2007. The New York City skyline is some 20 miles distant in this view along the Hudson River.
LEFT: As soon as Canadian Pacific purchased the Delaware & Hudson in 1991, they were never quite sure what to do with it. The short-lived “St. Lawrence & Hudson” was one attempt to reorganize its eastern operations in the United States, and a handful of units were repainted. The railfans were quick to suggest that “SLH” stood for “Sadly Losing Hope” in regards to the future of the D&H. One bright spot in the run-through freight operation was No. 5690, one of a few units that had its snowplow modified to clear the electric third- rail and assigned to Bronx service by CP. Train No. 417 is approaching Babcock Street in Yonkers, N.Y., a little more than ten miles north of the New York City line.
