To Be Expected?: Jim Rueber recently contributed this note to a fan-managed news- letter titled Brass Switchkey Railnews. It notes a news item he discovered in the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Evening Gazette of September 12, 1911, concerning a “Minnesota Lad [who] Averts Wreck On Chicago North Western Line.” “St. Paul, Sept 12 — Eugene Labbey, 17

years old, a farmer’s son, saved train No. 2 from Omaha on the Chicago & North Western Railway from running into a washout near Mendota, Minn., yesterday. The washout was caused by a heavy rain. “The danger point was behind a sharp

curve in the track, and the lad ran a quarter of a mile before he was at a point where he could stop the train and prevent a possible loss of life. The train was an hour late and running fast to make up time. In appreciation of his efforts the passengers on the dining car took a collection, drew up a set of resolutions and forwarded a check for $100.70 to the boy.” My reaction? One can easily imagine that it

would be the dining car where one would ex- pect the gay and convivial — and in this case generous — crowd on a speeding passenger train to be found.

Overhead Trains: The May column asked

readers to identify establishments — eating and otherwise — that are open to the public and have model trains — typically, but not al- ways G-scale — running overhead. Here are several to add to our growing list: McDonald’s of Pomeroy, at 423 West

Main Street in Pomeroy, Ohio; a fitting locale, we’re told, because it is located along the Ohio River on land that was once the Chesapeake & Ohio (ex-Hocking Valley) freight yard. Black Woods Grill & Bar, in two of its

three locations in the Duluth, Minn., area have landscaped layouts just below the ceil- ing that operate while the establishments are open. The two locations are at 2525 London Road, Duluth (where the track reaches three rooms), and 195 Highway 2, Proctor. The Two Harbors restaurant is sans trains. Our source for this information added, “Regardless of what you order, it is good.” For more informa- tion — on the restaurants, not the trains — go to http://blackwoods.com. Wegman’s Food Markets: Several read-

ers made mention of this mid-Altantic grocery operation. A check with corporate headquar- ters of the 86-store, six-state operation in Rochester, N.Y., revealed that many but not all of the company’s stores have large-scale trains running overhead. When the idea was first launched, the trains were over the bulk foods department, but today the locations vary by store. The consist is often geared to the locale.
