Odds-on Over-Under

In a city with hundreds of miles of track, some of it is bound to cross over each other. Here at Astoria-Ditmars station in Queens, the east approach of the Hell Gate flies over the subway line. In this shot two “N” trains arrive and depart as Acela rear engine No. 2027 soars over right to left. This part of the eastern Hell Gate approach is at an angle to the subway track, and this corrected wide-angle shot makes it look higher on the right when in fact it is the opposite.

South Bronx Sojourn

There are many parts of The Bronx that are quite beautiful. Oak Point is not one of them. Wedged between the industrial waterfront, the Bruckner Expressway, and numerous warehouses, this is a part of town most folks wish to get though as quickly as possible. Amtrak HHP8 No. 661 is powering a “Northeast Regional” on a run from Penn Station to Boston. The infrastructure is former New Haven and continues to host a mix of daily freight and passenger trains.

A Real-Life Oz

(CENTERSPREAD) The City: This is what dreams are made of. This is what Dorothy saw. Within these manmade canyons, one can find the path to do anything. And when you are finished for the day, you might be fortunate enough to take a subway to your low-rise home in the special neighborhood of Brooklyn called Carroll Gardens. A neighborhood with actual gardens in front of the homes, it is seen here just behind an “F” train on its way into the depths of residential Brooklyn.
