VERMONT CAN BE AN OVERLOOKED STATE when it comes to rail action. I suppose part of the rea- son is there are no Class I railroads within the state, and that means there are no dense- ly traveled segments of track. Still, though, towns like Bellows Falls, White River Junc- tion, and Rutland can be quite busy at times. I had my first chance to reacquaint myself
with Vermont after a long absence at White River Junction’s annual Glory Days of the Railroad celebration in September 2014. The
village has an impressive passenger station that is used by Amtrak’s Vermonter. A vari- ety of freight operators are in town as well, including New England Central (a part of Genesee & Wyoming), Claremont & Concord, Washington County (a part of Vermont Rail System), and Pan Am Railways. All the inter- change work can make for busy times. In June I had the chance to explore the
other part of the state when the NRHS con- vention was held in Rutland (page 42). On
