Vermont Rail System’s Florence switcher has a cut of cars and is ready to head off the mainline and up the steep grade to the Omya plant at Florence on June 21. After switching the plant, the train will return to Rutland, arriving after Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express has departed. PHOTO BY STEVE BARRY

most days Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express ar- rives in Rutland in the evening and departs in the morning; the trainset is turned and stored in Rutland overnight. Vermont Rail System is the big player in town, with trains head- ing in four different directions. The sched- ule is built, to some extent, around Amtrak (especially for trains heading north or west), so a lot happens in the 12-hour window that Amtrak is out of town. It’s not uncommon to find road trains to Bellows Falls, Burlington, and Hoosick Junction, N.Y., departing in the morning as locals from Whitehall, N.Y., and Florence, Vt., are coming in. In the afternoon and evening you find those road trains re- turning, with the Burlington train working around Amtrak. Then, once Amtrak is clear, the train to Whitehall gets out of town.

When I was in Vermont I took advantage of

the free evenings at the convention to do some night photography. During the longest days of the year in June, Amtrak shows up right about sunset and the Whitehall train departs almost as soon as Amtrak is out of the way. This allows for two easy night photos on the former Delaware & Hudson Whitehall line (now operated as VRS’s Clarendon & Pitts- ford) before the hours grow too long. I also got out to shoot on a couple of morn-

ings before convention activities started. All this did was convince me that I need to get back to Vermont again. I think I’ll be tack- ing on a couple of extra days to my trip to White River Junction this September to get back over to the Rutland side of the state. — STEVE BARRY

SUMMERAIL AT C.U.T. SAT., AUG. 8, 2015

Union Pacific 4-8-4 No. 8444 brings its own tornado during a photo runby at Narrows, Colo., on July 16, 1982. The trip ran from Denver to Sterling, Colo., as part of the NRHS convention. This was one of several runbys (most with an equally impressive plume) held during the trip.
