Argentina El Bioparque Teimakèn es, tal vez, la instalación más importante de su tipo en América Latina. Es una institución que combina jardines botánicos, un zoológico y un acuario, además de Museos de Historia Natural y Antropología, proporcionando a los visitantes nuevas experiencias de aprendizaje acerca de la biología y la posibilidad de representar el papel de guardianes del medio ambiente. Situado en la provincia de Buenos Aires, a pocos kilómetros de la
capital de Argentina, Teimakèn toma su nombre de la unión de dos palabras tehuelches, TEM (tierra) y Aiken (de vida), y evoca el respeto que esas comunidades indígenas tenían por naturaleza. En una extensión de 34,500 pies cuadrados, cuenta con más de 5.600 animales, incluyendo 180 especies de aves, 56 de peces y 24 de reptiles, 40 de mamíferos y 1.500 especies de árboles. El parque está dividido en cuatro grandes áreas conocidas como África, Asia, Nativo y Acuario. La zona de África alberga flamencos, pelícanos, antílopes, suricatos,
animals including 180 species of birds, 56 species of fish and 24 species of reptiles, 40 species of mammals and 1,500 kinds of trees. The park is divided into four big areas known as Africa, Asia, Native and Aquarium. The African zone hosts flamingos, pelicans, antelopes, meerkats, lemurs, hippos and zebras, among other species. In the Asian sector, guests can discover live tigers, bats, flying foxes and squirrels, and in Native territory we can find tapirs, pond turtles, penguins, cougars “yacarés” (a kind of alligator) and a lot of species from Patagonian wildlife. At the aquarium, meanwhile, visitors can see a great variety of freshwater and saltwater fishes from native and foreign species, including big sharks and stingrays. Teimakèn strives is to encourage its animals to show typical behaviours and
transmit them to future generations. For example, although food is supplied the first time in packs, later they must find it by themselves. The park puts in the same place more than one species, to replicate what happens in nature. Temaikèna also boasts two high technology interactive visitor centres with the names of Patagonia Alive and Water Tells Her Story, which exist both to intrigue guests and promote direct action to help preserve our environment. Colombia Ukumarí is the name of a highly anticipated new bio park located in Pereira, the capital of Risaralda, one of the provinces that belongs to the Coffee Cultural Landscape, which was added in 2011 to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The park gets its name from an Indian word to describe the spectacled bear,
one of the native species from the Andean region, which is in danger of extinction. When it opens on June 30, the 27.286 sq ft facility will be one of the largest parks of its kind in Latin America. Located 197 miles from Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, the park is now in the
final stages of development as the animals are transferred from Matecaña Zoo, also in Pereira, which will be closed after 55 years of operation. According to the zoo’s inventory, the collection comprises 514 animals of 142 species; 36 are exotic and 106 are native. The animals will be relocated gradually following
lemures, hipopótamos y cebras, entre otras especies. En el sector de Asia, los huéspedes pueden descubrir tigres vivos, murciélagos, zorros voladores y ardillas, y en territorio Nativo podemos encontrar tapires, tortugas de estanque, pingüinos, pumas, "yacarés" (una especie de cocodrilo), así como una gran cantidad de especies de la fauna patagónica. En el Acuario, por su parte, los visitantes pueden ver una gran variedad de peces de agua dulce y salada de especies nativas y extranjeras, incluyendo grandes tiburones y rayas. Uno de los principales esfuerzos de Teimakèn se encamina a impulsar a los animales a demostrar conductas típicas y a transmitirlas a las futuras generaciones. Por ejemplo, aunque la comida se suministra la primera vez en paquetes, más tarde deben encontrarla por sí mismos. interactivos, llamados Patagonia Viva y El agua cuenta su historia, cuyo propósito es el de causar curiosidad entre los visitantes y promover en ellos acciones directas y concretas para ayudar a conservar el medio ambiente. De igual manera, tiene un hospital universitario, donde se brinda capacitación sobre los tratamientos que requieren los animales alojados en el bioparque.
Colombia Ukumari es el nombre de un nuevo bioparque, que ha generado mucha expectativa, ubicado en Pereira, capital de Risaralda, una de las provincias que hace parte del Paisaje Cultural Cafetero, que se añadió, en 2011, a la lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO.
