Travel Buyer of the Year JULIE ILIFFE, CATEGORY BUYER – TRAVEL, IMPERIAL TOBACCO Julie has worked in travel procurement for 20 years and for Imperial Tobacco for the past 14, and has been a driving force in the company’s global consolidation to a single travel provider. Shortlisted: Michelle Bunworth, business support manager, Ted Baker; Peter Macey, facilities and central purchasing officer, MDDUS; Sarah Ockendon, category manager – professional services, John Lewis Partnership; Garry Pyne, procurement manager, national supply chain, Network Rail Infrastructure


The panel commended the airline’s 360 degree approach to CSR – including wildlife conservation, a sustainable supply chain and significant charitable work – and the consideration it gave to the balance between environmental and commercial goals.


A truly impressive winning entry, said the judges. This team has achieved outstanding results on a massive scale – a case of big really is beautiful – and it demonstrates the true meaning of a travel team and its responsibilities.


The judges felt this candidate demonstrated passion and a true


understanding of the travel buyer’s role. She displayed solid negotiating experience and good procurement knowledge, as well as sound stakeholder and supplier management skills.


Outstanding Achievement Award CAROLYN MCCALL OBE, CEO, EASYJET The winner of this year’s Outstanding Achievement Award was a unanimous choice. Joining as CEO in 2010, Carolyn McCall is credited with much of the success of Easyjet’s drive to win the hearts and minds of the business travel market, from the introduction of allocated seating and business-orientated fares, to its deals with all the major global distribution systems to make it easier for travel management companies to sell its flights. Under her leadership, the airline has consistently exceeded City expectations, paying a dividend for the first time in 2012, with profits in 2013 rising by 51 per cent to £478 million. In January last year, Prime Minister David Cameron appointed Carolyn as a UK Business Ambassador. She has a string of awards to her name, not least an OBE for services to women in business, and the judges hope this latest accolade is suitable recognition for her contribution to our industry.
