COMMUNICATION IS KEY TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE TARGETS ARE MET


hris Chibnall’s award-winning Broadchurch is, hands down, the best drama to have appeared on British television for quite some time. ITV really picked a winner when it commissioned the series back in 2011, and Olivia Colman must be one of the most accomplished actors of the modern era. I do feel a little bit sorry, however, for David Tennant, the Scottish actor who became a British household name in Doctor Who. For some reason, the programme’s online followers give him a relentlessly hard time about his accent. Perhaps I’m too consumed by what a dish he is to recognise that he might have a tendency to mumble – but it’s not as if he is Rab C Nesbitt, the drunk Glaswegian ‘philosopher’ for whom the BBC provided optional subtitles when the titular programme was screened in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Perhaps Tennant’s critics are just not listening hard enough? The challenge of communication is a topic that regularly


rears its head in corporate travel circles. With so much change taking place across regions and industries, the ability to articulate clearly has never been more important. Travel managers are dealing with employees from a range of different generations and cultures. ‘The end is where it begins’ was the catchphrase used by ITV when it started to promote the second series of Broadchurch earlier this year. It’s an apt turn of phrase for our own community of buyers and managers. They spend so much time on supplier negotiations, requests for proposal, consultation exercises with travel management companies and change management projects...and, finally, when a new policy or programme is rolled out, that’s when the fun begins. There can be no ‘if you build it, they will come’ mentality: a concise communication strategy must be simultaneously implemented if compliance targets are to be met.
