FACEBOOK AT WORK. No, not a disciplinary matter this time, but a new product for the office: in this issue’s Tech Talk (p18) we find out how the bosses’ bête noire social media platform is being adapted for internal corporate – and potentially business travel – use.
Meanwhile, at a recent dinner for journalists, HRG unveiled, with some drama, its new product for ‘unmanaged travel’: Fraedom (yes, perplexing spelling – but it does give them brand advantages, such as the URL). It is essentially a simple, low-cost travel- and expense-management tool for small businesses. But it was interesting to hear them talk about unmanaged travel – together with the Facebook fandango, these are symptoms of how the sector appears to be in flux. Our feature on evolving TMCs (p64) finds a shifting landscape, full of challenges to the traditional supply chain. “Frictionless” experiences and outsourced travel management appear to signal the way forward. When I talk to Chambers CEO Chris Thelen (p29), he also says TMCs will increasingly be “outsourced travel managers” in future. So, it seems change management is a necessary skill these days, whatever your role – and Ask the Experts (p40) looks at how to plan for successful transformation in your organisation. Technology is often seen as a disruptor in managed travel, but when it comes to duty-of-care and risk management, our traveller tracking cover story (p92) finds that tech is a force for good (though there’s always a touch of Big Brother paranoia about being electronically tagged...). All aspects of risk to your business are in the spotlight at our
