how to sell Bali B Why sell it:
2015 is expected to ring in a new boom era for luxury holidays in Bali. Ritz-Carlton Bali Reserve and Chedi Club Jimbaran (GHM’s fourth property here) are just two of many recent fi ve-star arrivals competing for regular visitors to Bali and attracting fi rst-time visitors. A previous gripe for visitors who wanted to
truly experience the island was the almost- constant traffi c jams but a new highway means a far smoother connection between the hotel zone to the rest of the island, making tours and sightseeing an increasingly important part of most Balinese holidays.
Who to sell to:
With its exotic beaches and romantic temple backdrops Bali has always been a favourite wedding and honeymoon destination. In recent years more and more honeymooners (and other young travellers) have also been keen to combine their holiday with several once-in-a- lifetime experiences from Bali’s growing menu of activities: the island is building a reputation as a place where you can do far more than
What to sell:
For most visitors the cliffside temple of Uluwatu and the highland art capital of Ubud are must- see side-trips (with Ubud’s Monkey Temple still ranking as Bali’s best-known attraction). Treks to the heights of Bratan and Agung volcanoes are favourite day trips for the adventurous. With roads improving there’s now an increasingly convenient option to make day trips farther west. Although few people even realize it West Bali is one of the most exciting and accessible wilderness frontiers for tourists in Indonesia. It is almost inconceivable that 190 sq kms of virtually unexplored jungle could lie just a three-hour drive from Bali’s international airport…and even more surprising that it would harbour some of the most prolifi c wildlife in South East Asia!

The heaviest rains fall between December and February. Rain tends to be short and sharp rather than prolonged but in April the dry season comes into full swing, bringing with it pleasantly cool breezes. While there are many important island- wide festivals, there are countless ceremonies taking place throughout the island at any time and (with good local knowledge) it should be possible to include an important temple event in almost any package at any time of the year. While it is a unique experience to be on the island during Nyepi, the Balinese ‘day of silence’,

ali is synonymous with palm-shaded paradise beaches and, increasingly, with many of the world’s most luxurious resorts. Most
visitors these days are also keen, however, to travel inland from the picture-perfect coastline to witness at least a little of the unique cultural life of the legendary ‘island of the gods’.
merely relax on a beach. For those who want to experience more than sunbathing there is everything from volcano-climbing, surfi ng, yoga, rafting, cycling, quad-biking, diving and 4x4 safaris to elephant and horse-riding. Many hotels also offer classes in such things as cookery, kite- making, jewellery and a whole range of different cultural experiences.

“Remind your clients that they’re not just booking a once- in-a-lifetime beach holiday. Bali’s unique culture and charming people will remain embedded in their mental scrapbooks long after images of the beach have faded”
What’s new:
Last September, Garuda Indonesia introduced direct fl ights from Gatwick to Jakarta via Amsterdam fi ve times a week. The national carrier also offers domestic fl ights from the capital to Bali (along with low-cost regional airlines Lion Air and Air Asia). Bali intends to consolidate its position as one of the world’s favourite destinations for weddings, honeymoons and vow-renewals. As Ms. Esthy Reko Astuti, Director General of Tourism Marketing says, “We’re delighted to welcome so many new world-class properties to our ever-expanding tourism portfolio, presenting an even wider choice of accommodation for those looking to Bali for weddings, honeymoons, vow renewals or simply to enjoy a very special holiday with loved ones.”
