Cruises sail to the island and stay in port two nights, so passengers have three days to explore. New for 2015, Holland America Line is reinstating its Bermuda cruises after a two- year break. The seven-night voyages, which alternate with one-week cruises to Quebec, are on Veendam, sailing from Boston and docking in the heart of Hamilton, the capital.

BERMUDA BY CRUISE CONTROL BY JANE ARCHER

”It was a great idea: a mother and daughter learn-to-dive cruise to Bermuda, where we would be staying three days. But rather than just exploring under the sea and missing all the island has to offer on land, we agreed on the best of both worlds. We would learn scuba basics on a two-tank resort course with Blue Water (divebermuda.com), priced $140pp including equipment, and have time for sightseeing as well. It was a good compromise as Bermuda – actually several islands linked by bridges and causeways – was delightful: pretty, clean, friendly and with lovely beaches. A brilliant public transport network meant we were able to pack in a cycle ride, Segway tour and history at the Maritime Museum, and time to relax at the beach. We even got our undersea legs on a snuba dive – a cross between snorkelling and scuba where the tanks ride on a raft on the surface so you don’t have to carry them.”

partnered with Hilton Grand Vacations Club to turn his 47-room family hotel Ariel Sands (arielsands.com) into a timeshare property. The $100-million project will see the existing property razed and replaced with the 214-room Hilton Club at Ariel Sands. The fi rst phase of a $90-million renovation

of the 410-room Fairmont Hamilton Princess (fairmont.com/hamilton-bermuda) has added new suites, swimming pools and a 60-berth marina. Still to come is a new Sameulsson restaurant and the refurb of guest rooms in the main building. A new Chef’s Table at the Reefs Hotel & Club

(thereefs.com) gives up to 25 guests the opportunity to sample an eight-course wine-and-food pairing menu created by Executive Chef Douglas Sisk. It’s held once a week and is priced at $110pp. Hidden Gems (bermudahiddengems.com) is a new

ecotours company offering year-round caving, cliff-jumping, trekking and swimming excursions for adventure lovers.

Tourism talk

“The decline in tourists is a concern. The number of British visitors increased 13% in 2013 to 23,568, but overall numbers

were down 5.75% to just under 580,000. British arrivals to the end of July 2014 also fell 7.28% to 12,516. We have been evaluating our partnerships with British Airways, operators and agents to fi nd ways to reverse this. The US is our primary market but our British connections are important and we are

looking at new ways to promote the islands in the UK. Consumers research online and pick up information by word of mouth so we market direct to them, but also educate targeted agents and operators about the Bermuda experience via online training and fam trips so they can fulfi l the booking process.” Victoria Isley, Chief Sales and Marketing Offi cer, Bermuda Tourism Authority
