BY LAURA GELDER SRILANKAN Airlines is to pour up to $500 million into a modernisation and fleet renewal programme. The project, the most far-reaching in the airline’s history,
will see its
older, wide-bodied aircraft replaced with more fuel-efficient models from Airbus, each of which will feature 269 Economy seats and 28 Business seats. SriLankan expects to take delivery
of six A330-300 aircraft and four A350-900 aircraft between the end of last year and 2021. The new fleet will come equipped with the technology,
very part of which will include the introduction of ‘Linked
SriLankan’ which includes wifi and mobile (GSM) connectivity. Kapila Chandrasena, CEO of
SriLankan Airlines, commented: “This marks the start of a significant period of investment and modernisation, improving our service in order to maintain our status as one of Asia’s leading airlines. The new models will deliver greater comfort and bring strong financial returns,
increasing the levels of
tourism for Sri Lanka as a whole.” Last year SriLankan joined the
latest in-flight
oneworld alliance, becoming the first carrier from the Indian subcontinent to join a global airline alliance.

Bulgaria offers the feel-good factor
BULGARIA wants to broaden its appeal beyond being a summer sun and beach and affordable skiing destination by positioning itself as one of Europe’s leading spa and wellness destinations. Speaking at World Travel Market
the country’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Energy, Branimar Botev, said: “We are blessed with having the greatest concentration of thermal mineral springs
in
Europe and we are keen to exploit this centuries-old natural asset by attracting growing numbers of overseas visitors to our developed
network of balneology resorts (which treat health problems).” One of Bulgaria’s leading spa
resorts is Velingrad, 133kms from the capital, Sofia, in the south of the country. It offers more than 80 separate mineral springs with a variety
of preventative and
curative properties. Varshets, 100kms north of Sofia, is one of the country’s oldest spa resorts dating back to Roman times. It is close to Stara Planina (Old Mountain), a popular starting point for hiking tours.
