NEW ZEALAND

Those who visit New Zealand in the winter will be rewarded by fewer crowds and even more stunning views. And wintersports lovers will be in heaven! The South Island's resorts like Queenstown and Wanaka will be buzzing. Or head north to the country’s only skiable volcano, Mount Ruapehu. June or July is also the best time to spot whales in Kaikoura, because it’s the middle of their migration period. newzealand.com

CANADA

Summer is a good time to visit Canada's colder regions to spot its abundant wildlife. Excursions to the remote Torngat Mountains Base Camp in Labrador run from mid-July to mid-September and see visitors immerse themselves in Innuit culture as well as look for wildlife like polar bears. Alternatively, head to Nunavut for narwhal watching or the Northwest Territory's Wood Buffalo National Park for caribou, moose and bears. canada.travel

SWAZILAND

Swaziland’s capital, Mbabane, isn’t well known but its annual festival, Bushfi re, is helping to change that. It was listed as one of the 'Nine Music Festivals You Actually Want to Attend This Summer' by MTV’s global brand, Iggy. The festival’s 2014 line- up was largely home-grown African talent with Japanese, Colombian and Swiss acts thrown in and Ladysmith Black Mambazo making an appearance. All funds go to local communities. ( May 29-31, 2015). bush-fi re.com
