Tourism talk The safety of Kenya’s visitors is a key priority of the Kenyan government and safety measures across the country

continue to be assessed. We have put in place a Tourism Police Unit (TPU) to monitor tourism areas and have increased the number of tourist police. The UK is the number one market to Kenya and with 97% of the country open for business and operating as usual, the KTB will work hard to communicate this message to the trade. In March the KTB will host a regional roadshow with the private sector and trade partners which will visit three or four cities in the UK. We will meet with agents to update them on Kenya and educate them.” Muriithi Ndegwa, MD, Kenya Tourism Board

honeymooners and anyone with a yearn for watersports. Deep sea fi shing, diving, sailing and kitesurfi ng are all on offer through experts with great names like Unreel Fishing and Tribe. Access to the coast and the parks is made simple through private charter or scheduled fl ights within minutes of arriving at Nairobi Airport, avoiding the need to drive into the city. Boskovic Charters will fl y clients to any private strip in the country and Air Kenya has an extensive network with daily schedule services from its base at Wilson Airport to the coast and into all the major game parks. Wildlife safaris remain Kenya’s big draw and the alluring game parks of Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, Shaba and Meru are teeming with wiildlife, blissfully unaware of any troubles. Here the game lodges are amongst the best anywhere in Africa, Governors Camp featuring in the 2014 Conde Nast Gold List of top hotels in Kenya. More exciting news comes from Ol Donyo in the Chyulu Hills, where its founder, Richard Bonham, has been awarded this year’s Tusk Award for his conservation work through Big Life Foundation. Beyond the classic safari as we all know it

Kenyan operators and creative safari lodge owners are responding to the growth in demand for activity and family holidays. At Great Plains’ Ol Donyo property in Chyulu Hills, horses are brought to your front door and are suited to novice and expert alike. Having just returned from Kenya I have no hesitation in continuing to travel to, promote and recommend this stunning

country. It is a vast country and the areas affected by the warnings are huge distances from the safari destinations such as Samburu, Amboseli, Laikipia and the Maasai Mara. The coast around Mombasa remains an area where the advice is not to travel, but if clients are looking to add a beach stay on to the end of their safari then there are plenty of alternatives in Kenya itself or in Zanzibar, Mauritius and Dubai. “Kenyan tourism has been hit pretty hard, but that has led to some fantastic offers trying to tempt travellers back. These offers, together with world-class game viewing, superb service and fantastic accommodation mean that it is a great time to be making plans”. Liz Hall, General Manager, African Pride

“I think that the country is overcoming the obstacles and challenges it has and is still facing by promoting positive

tourism to the country and by showcasing that the Kenya Tourism Board is pulling out all stops to enhance and restore confi dence to the luxury traveller. Not only the tourism board, but also the key suppliers who are constantly encouraging safe and responsible tourism to the country. The major safari destinations, like the Maasai Mara and the Laikipia regions, are selling but we are tending not to recommend areas such as Mombasa and Lamu until the unrest has completely settled.” Helen McCulloch, Africa & Indian Ocean, Sales and Product Manager, Exsus 
